Transform Your Audience Into Cheerleaders (continued)

  1. Decide that you will speak with an energy that is contagious. Whatever need people have to hear your message, and whatever information they gain from your message, the energy with which you present yourself is at least as important. Your energy itself is possibly the most valuable thing you will impart to your listeners. People need energy and animation like they need air to breathe. Your energy level will form a kind of invisible connection with your audience.
  2. 4) Begin to connect with your audience before you speak. Don’t come out of an office or back room to emerge onto the stage and see your audience for the first time. Be there as your audience is gathering. Make it a point to connect with a few people. Ask a few questions and listen. Find out what’s foremost in the thinking of your listeners. Two things will happen:
    • You will gain an ally in the audience
    • You will remind yourself that your task is not to give a presentation but to connect with people

The best speaking is really a conversation with your audience. Begin that conversation before you begin speaking.

  1. Practice being kind in your thinking about others. You probably won’t find this point in any of the books, but I’ve noticed that if I tend to be critical of others, it’s harder to stand before a group of people and envision them as wanting me to succeed. It’s harder to connect with my listeners. I will tend to be more critical of myself and tend to focus on myself and how I’m coming across and what critical things others are thinking about me. This is deadly to a public speaker. On the other hand, if I tend to notice the strengths, and not the flaws of others, I am more likely to notice and build upon those things in myself, and expect others will tend to feel this way toward me. It’s just a theory of mine. Test it out and see if it helps.

Obviously there’s more to successful speaking than the above five points, but they are enough for now. Put them into practice next time you speak, and you will experience an immediate improvement in your presentation and in the results you get, no matter what your current level of speaking ability.

To your success and significance,

Try email marketing. It's fast, easy and inexpensive so you can communicate with your market audience on a regular basis and stay "top of mind" to them. I use iContact. It has all the features you need:

  • Contact management
  • Ability to create and format emails, blogs and RSS feeds
  • Autoresponders for series
  • A sign-up form for your Web site
  • Excellent training in how to use the tool
  • And more.

Please take a look at this powerful tool. It is central to a successful email marketing program. Don't try to patch your email marketing together with Outlook or some other less powerful program. It simply won't work.
