From Firing Squad To Cheerleaders

How to Transform Your Live Audience From A Scary Group of Executioners Into Your Cheerleaders

Does it frighten you to stand up in front of 50 people and speak? Would you rather eat rocks, jump off a cliff, or wrestle a python? If you answered yes, you’re in good company. Most people would rather face death than speak publicly. However, did you ever notice that there are some people who not only can deliver a public speech—not only are they comfortable speaking—but they actually seem to get energy from their audience. They love it!

  • How would your life change if you loved public speaking and drew energy from your live audience?
  • How would it change your success at work?
  • Did you ever say no to an opportunity because at some point you would be called upon to speak publicly?
  • Did you ever get passed by for a promotion because your public speaking skills needed improvement?

Public speaking is the highest paid profession, and people who are comfortable speaking before a group are often the highest paid in their professions.

It is possible to transform the fear of speaking into fun—to transform your live audience from a scary group of executioners into your cheerleaders. Here are five simple guidelines I use when coaching clients through public presentations. No magic tricks. Nothing like imagining your audience is a group of large tomatoes, or that you’re king of the universe, or under a hypnotic trance. The following are simple, common-sense tips to help you feel more comfortable and speak more effectively.

Five Ways To Turn Your Live Audience Into Cheerleaders

  1. Realize that your audience is for you, not against you. They want you to succeed, because if you succeed, in some way, they benefit. Before you speak, make a list of the reasons your audience wants you to succeed. You’ll find there are many. As you prepare, practice, and speak, these reasons will influence what you say and how you say it, and will also tend to replace fear with encouragement.
  2. Focus on the purpose of your presentation. The more compelling the reason for you to deliver your message, and the more you can get caught up in the urgency and purpose of your presentation, issues of fear will begin to melt away. If a building was on fire and you were the only person who could explain to a room full of people how to find the exit, you would suddenly be transformed into a top class speaker to a group of cheerleaders. Search for the compelling urgency in your message, and speak to that.
