How to Get Better, Faster IT Service Results

Most everything you do in your Internet marketing requires you to put on your IT (Information Technology) hat and make the technology work for you. You will be pressing your computer to the limits.

  • You will be discovering how to get more out of your software programs than ever before.
    • From your word processor (Microsoft Word, Word Perfect...) to your Web creation tool (Adobe Go-live, Dreamweaver, Microsoft Front Page...) to PowerPoint, to various Plug-ins like the PowerPoint Flash Converter, you will be pressing your software to the limits.

To the extent you become at home with your computer and its software programs, your final product will shine.

  • You will have more versatility and flexibility in product creation.
  • You, the product designer, will be one with the technical tools you employ.
  • This will create an awesome synergy and set your products apart from the competition.

You have two great challenges:

  1. Make it through the learning curve.
  2. Working out the "bugs".

This week we'll talk about challenge #2. Next week, challenge #1.

Working out the "bugs" and problems with your computer and software.

All software programs will have "bugs". Things will not always work as advertised or as you expected. Here is a process that has worked for me:

  1. If your software manufacturer offers automatic updates, turn that process on. Behind the scenes, even the best, Windows, Macintosh, Microsoft Word and others are constantly discovering bugs and fixing them. Be sure you set your computer to receive the updates automatically.
  2. If your software manufacturer does not offer automatic updates, visit their site periodically and look for update downloads. Most are free. I recently nearly converted my PowerPoint 2002 to 2004 by downloading free Microsoft updates and templates from the Microsoft site!
  3. If your program is not working up to expectation, contact the manufacturer and ask for help. Here's how to impress the manufacturer's tech department and get the best and quickest results:

Help them to help you. It's like going to a doctor. The more information you accurately give, the better help you will receive. You need to help the tech person re-create the problem you are having, so they can find a fix for you. They need to know exactly what you are experiencing including the tools you are using. Have the following information ready:

  • The model and year of your computer, and memory capacity.
  • The operating system (OS). Windows 2000, Windows XP, Macintosh...
  • The model and year of your software program: (i.e. PowerPoint 2002, Adobe Go-Live...)
  • Exactly what page you were on, or component you were using when you experienced the problem.
